We’re so lucky to have this place. It’s the best dog park in Whistler.
“Arfa Park” (the “dogs rule” section of Alpha Lake Park) is the local hangout for dog owners. It feels gloriously set away from the tourist buzz, but Arfa Park is easy to get to. It’s only 4 kilometres south of Whistler Village along the Valley Trail.
My dog Gracie goes nuttily happy when we come down there. Arfa Park is the special fenced-in area of the park where dogs can run around and swim off-leash. It has its own dog-friendly beach and dock, sand pit (for digging), and double-fenced gate (to prevent runaways. Breathe a sigh of relief.)
Alpha Lake is just idyllic. It’s a mini version of Russet Lake (another beautiful spot, but tucked away in Garibaldi Park) right by the city. It’s one of the reasons why I moved to Whistler with my dog. Alpha Lake recharges my batteries (and Gracie’s too, judging by her enthusiasm) right up to the top when we come down here.
Alpha Lake is good for the humans too. It features a picnic area (with free grills for BBQing), hiking and running trails, tennis courts, a playground (the Owl’s Nest), volleyball courts, basketball courts and more. Do you fish? Alpha Lake is stocked with rainbow trout every year. I’ve heard the island around Pine Point Park is a decent spot.
The rest of the Alpha Lake Park is also dog-friendly, but keep your dog on leash outside of Arfa Park.
Here’s another great idea: bike it to the lake. Take the Valley Trail from Whistler Village. The trail runs under the Sea-to-Sky, along the golf course, and crosses Lakeside Park.
And Arfa Park may also be the cat spot. My cat Tofino hangs out here – I’ve seen him saunter down!
